Reassure them that there is nothing wrong with your relationship and tell them the benefits they will experience by entering an open relationship. Help them understand that they are equally a part of the open relationship as you are.
- Reassure them it is not just about sex- When most people think about open relationships, they think that it is all about sexual gain. There should definitely be an emotional need being met as well as physical. Explain that to your partner and make sure that they understand that they are not inadequate in some way and causing you to seek an open relationship.
- Set boundaries upfront- Boundaries are so extremely important in all of the relationships we encounter. Talk to your partner and make sure you two are on the same page about what to expect from an open relationship, what is allowed, and what is considered cheating. Once boundaries are clearly laid out and understood, your partner will feel more at ease because they will know exactly what they are getting themselves in to.
