While a sex addiction is not as obvious as a drug or alcohol addiction, it is a very real disease. For a younger person, they may be viewed as someone who is simply “enjoying life.” An older person may be deemed “not marriage material.” Here are just a few signs that you may be addicted to sex.
Always Seeking Sexual Material
One of the hallmarks of sexual addiction is that you are always seeking out sexual material. This sexual media can come in different forms. The most obvious form is pornographic websites. You may also have every hook up app installed on your cell phone. If you find that most of your time online is spent viewing sexual material, you may have a problem.
Leading a Double Life
Whether you have a boyfriend, a girlfriend, a wife, or a husband, the expectation is usually one of monogamy. There are different reasons that people cheat on their significant others. However, if you have never been faithful in a relationship and most of your break ups are because of you cheating, that is another sign of sexual addiction.
It is important to note that the term cheating does not always mean the act of intercourse. It can start with what you may think is harmless flirting and conversation. Whether the result is ending up going all the way, it may be a serious indicator of addiction.
Compromising Work and Personal Relationships
When you have any kind of addiction, including one of a sexual nature, you will habitually put your sexual needs ahead of everything else in your life. You may find that you are ditching work for sexual adventures. You may even engage in sexual activity at work.
When it comes to personal relationships, those with significant others are not the only ones that suffer. You may find that you sleep with the significant others of friends and family members. You may even be labeled as the one that cannot be trusted around others.
Even though many people may make light of having many sexual exploits, it can be debilitating. If you find that most of your time and thoughts are consumed by the need to engage in sexual activity whether it is intercourse with another person, masturbation, or viewing porn excessively, it may be time to seek professional help.
